TIL... . nationalmap.gov.au is/was an open source TerriaJS instance delivering all kinds of data via open standards in a single space.
The digital atlas of Australia is based on proprietary ESRI services. Colour me disappointed, not surprised
The strategic question being: why develop a new digital atlas if the old one was not used?
Personally I would have chosen to keep developing an open platform, especially in current geopolitical light.
@adamsteer three words “Gulf of America” sorry but no one outside United Nazis of North America should consider #ESRI this should be a tipping point for @qgis
Seriously - free #strategic advice for every government: Do not build infrastructure on systems over which you have no control.
"but we have a contract"
Cool cool are you able to change business decisions within the contracted party? Probably no. You have a risk you simply cannot control or mitigate.
This is why #FOSS should be at the heart of all national digital infrastructures.
@adamsteer #newsflash the #USA no longer adheres to laws and contracts are worthless. FFS! There’s a reason the Democrats aren’t saying anything. The people have spoken and want Nazi dictatorship.
@fletch yeah the conversation should have gone:
"uh but we need..."
"..but we might be sued under an ISDS!"
"..buut.."
@adamsteer but it’s easier to nazify our software
"unfair dismissal"
"...uh. I hadnt thought of it that way"
After years of techbros contract and T&C changes and now Trump's unilateral and immediate government contract changes, how can any adult believe their contracts matter against any but small companies?
@adamsteer I am often using two examples with @qgis at work - during #COVID19 I had to stay at home but managed quickly to get all needed apps on my home PC - #QGIS, #SAGAGIS etc. so I was able to work from home. Would not be possible with commercial SW. Second, we are working in the field of #emergency preparedness - would be huge problem if license server of some SW stopped working when we need maps quickly... but no problem with #FOSS.
