Sala Rusconi

In the Archiginnasio there is a room called the Sala Rusconi. Named after Pietro Giacomo Rusconi (1865-1916), it contains many rare and valuable books and manuscripts which were collected by him. These were donated to Bologna after the death of his wife Luisa Verzaglia in 1919 - as the couple had not had any children. You unfortunately cannot go into the room now but you can peek through the iron bar door from the Sala Stabat Mater.
The portrait you see over the door is Rusconi himself.
I wanted to give the photo the feel of an old-fashioned illustration to compliment the treasures and antiquities in this library.

(Per quelli che sanno un po' di dialetto bolognese, non trovate un po' ironico che ci sia una sala così piena di saggezza e storia e si chiama... Rusco... ni. 😂)

[en] Harvard "Teaches a Valuable Lesson"

"#History has long taught us that such #appeasement doesn’t work when concession is seen as weakness - or even as surrender."

"Even critics of higher #education and Trump allies believe #Trump is dramatically overplaying his hand."

"This battle is one as vital as higher education has ever faced."

I was at the Teatro Anatomico (Anatomical Theatre) today! There's so much to say about it but we'll just concentrate on the ceiling right now. It was built in 1645 by Antonio Levanti. We have Apollo, the protector of medicine, in the centre and he's surrounded by 14 other constellations. Back in the day consulting the heavens was a pretty normal part of medicine. You know, mercury is in retrograde so we should amputate that toe.
Astrology and medicine were intertwined and every part of the body was associated with an astrological sign. The ceiling was a representation of the medicine of the time and also how the human body and the heavens above were intrinsically linked.
Also, huge thank you to the Arabic world and the Middle East because without their knowledge, ancient science and wisdom - we would not have modern medicine! ✨
This photo was taken from on top of the slab/operating table in the middle of the room.

Hundreds of scholars have had their visas revoked and dozens have been detained.

What’s exceptional about Öztürk’s case is how her detention was caught on camera.

What’s scariest, immigration lawyers say, is how little is known about all the others.

Daughter, PhD student in Australia and member of PhD student groups involving folks all around the world, has been warned (as have all the others) not to travel to or even via the USA for conferences without scrubbing ALL social media and private info (e-mail, etc).

This is government advice, not just students talking to students.

The world is going to have to align around the USA, rather than with it.

I’m driving myself mad because I can’t decide on a minor for my degree. I want to do one, especially if I end up not doing an Honours degree.

I. Cannot. Decide. Ahhhhh.

Edit: important info, I’m doing this for me, not for any future employability or job. I’m disabled and don’t plan to ever work for anyone except myself in the future.

@adam I've worked with over 200 undergrads and graduates in the last 4 years and I can say that most of them (75%) don't have critical thinking skills IE. Ability to think for themselves.

The program I've created tests their critical thinking skills and it is clear that high school and university do not develop this in their curriculum.

I have to get them to unlearn so that they can start to develop these skills.

“Harvard didn’t blink. The fight starts here,” writes @Daojoan for her Index newsletter. “[It] did not act quickly. But it acted clearly. That clarity must be contagious. Because unless every university in America is ready to say no to federal ideological coercion, this moment will not be a line in the sand. It will be a footnote in the obituary of academic freedom,” she writes. “The government has already decided it can control the curriculum by controlling the cash. What happens next is not up to them. It's up to everyone else.”

"As is required, #Harvard's reports include information on gifts & contracts from foreign sources exceeding $250K annually. This includes contracts to provide executive #education, other training, & academic publications," the #university said.

Among info also sought by #Trump within 30 days are records relating to expelled foreign #students…, #research by those who were expelled & a #list of visiting researchers, students & #faculty at Harvard who are *affiliated* w/ foreign govts.

Edgelord minions of Peter Thiel left this manifesto on the door to my building yesterday. Guess they were firing a shot across our bow but they didn't count that the Engineering School deals really harshly with unauthorized posters. To add to the indignity, the buttons in the elevator pictured weren't working until I went down to the basement and called it from there.

Austria is planning a "Students at risk" program for students from the USA and other countries - including support for changing one's studies to an Austrian university and € 1200 per month.

It's only for 50 students, but if this sounds interesting for you, keep an eye on this website (which has info on lots of different grants):
